1 Cotton Waste
There are two classes of waste, known respectively as " hard " and " soft," and the methods of their treatment differ according to the used to which the waste is put. Hard Waste consists essentially of the waste from ring frames, reeling and winding machines, cop bottoms, and all other waste of a thready nature. The products is invariably spun into the finer counts of yarn. Soft Waste is mostly composed of scutcher droppings, card cylinder and flat strips and fly, clearer laps, sweepings, etc. It is adapted for lower counts, soft-spun weft, etc. In order to obtain the best results from the above waste it is essential that the two kinds be separated and treated accordingly. The waste thrown off in the process of cotton spinning may be utilised in a variety of ways. Certain portions may be worked up again in the mill in which it is made; or in its loose state it may be converted into wadding, gun cotton, etc. (see waste spinning) -
2 Waste Cloths
Low-quality cotton fabrics made from hard twisted warp and waste weft in plain or twill weave. The warp is about 28's to 34's and weft from 8's to 1's or even coarser. Waste plains are plain weave. Waste twills or sheetings are the 2 & 2 weave. Waste cotton blankets are made in wide widths and coarse weft known as " Jumbo " cops are used, which are as large as can be accommodated in the shuttle. The cops are solid and the weft is unwound from the inside of the cop. There is no shuttle peg, but the inside walls of the shuttle are serrated to keep the cop in its place. (See Blankets) -
3 Spinners' Waste
Waste which occurs during the conversion of raw cotton into yarn. The approximate waste at the different machines is: - -
4 Sledded Cotton
This is the name given to raw cotton which has been picked by a machine termed the " Sled." The sled is a form of box about 8 feet long and 4 feet wide, which is drawn between the rows of cotton plants so that the bolls pass into grooves and are stripped off and fall into the box. Owing to the device also stripping off leaf, twig and bits of the stems, the waste after cleaning in the spinning mill is at least 50 per cent more than from hand-picked cotton. -
5 Stringy Cotton
This is a defective cotton produced by ginning wet or unripe seed cotton, or sometimes by a wrong adjustment of the brushes that take the lint from the ginsaws. The fibres in these strings do not separate easily, while many of them are knocked out in the cleaning processes at the mill and go into the waste. -
6 Combed Cotton Yarn
The best qualities of cotton yams are combed. The operation of combing removes the short fibres and impurities not removed by carding, and gives a yarn that is stronger, cleaner, smoother and more lustrous than a carded yarn. It is more expensive than carded yarn. Ordinary combing gives about 15 per cent of waste, super combing gives about 18 to 19 per cent, and double combing 24 to 25 per cent (see Combing)Dictionary of the English textile terms > Combed Cotton Yarn

7 Mobile Cotton
A variety of American cotton rather short in staple, dirty and soft. It is usually used for mixing with waste for the spinning of yarns for sponge cloths, lamp wicks, rug and carpet yarns, etc. The better qualities make good yarns for weft in cheap raising cloths, especially when mixed with some of the East Indian varieties, in counts up to 20's. -
8 Crow Waste
